Think about how portable your computer must be. Small and light computers are expensive nowadays. It is not easy to choose the right laptop computer, especially when it also has to be portable. But with the right know-how, the choice gets easier.

1. Go for lots of working memory, preferably two gigabytes, or more.

2. Hard drives are now both spacious and cheap. One tip is to settle for the basic disk that has a good price, and later expand to a portable USB drive as storage space needs grows. You will get a flexible solution, plus you can easily move your information to another computer.

Flash memory will be great, but today they are more expensive than a regular hard drive. Advantages of a flash is that they have no moving parts, they are lighter, less fragile, silent and have lower power consumption.

3. Battery life is crucial if you are often out and about. Is your computer good at energy-saving and optimization? How much is an extra battery? Ideally, one that can manage an entire day, but we have not quite got there yet. Computers that can handle four hours of battery life may be considered to be pretty good today.

4. Think about how portable computer you need. The ultra-thin flexible computers are expensive and often do not have the same performance as heavy components.

5. Compare the screens of the computers you select from. The screen differs slightly between different models. The sharpness can vary greatly. Please look for displays with LED technology if you are looking for best sharpness. Glossy screens are great for photos, but can cause dull glare from ambient lighting. For the office is often advisable to use regular screens.

6. Do you work a lot with images, you should look at the graphics processor. The integrated graphics performance is often worse than, say, an external Nvidia/Ati chip.

8. Ergonomics is important. Check that the special keys are placed where you are used to find them and you can just hit the special combination you’re used to. You can not switch the keyboard on your laptop, so it is important that you feel comfortable with it. You can of course buy another one, USB maybe, but that’s not great for traveling.

9. What are the outputs? USB ports can not get enough of. Do you need a parallel port? It is not a given on modern computers. Output to an external monitor?

10. Do you have a digital camera with a certain type of card? Has the computer such a card reader built in?
